Numeracy

At Casey Fields Primary School, our Numeracy program is designed to align with the Victorian Curriculum and cater to the diverse needs of our students. We focus on fostering a positive mindset and attitude towards mathematics, ensuring that all students have access to high-level numeracy education while honing specific skills.

Our program incorporates a variety of contemporary teaching methods, including:

Explicit Teaching:
U
tilising our instructional model to demonstrate concepts followed by opportunities for students to practice these skills.

Flexible Workshop Groups:
Using student data to target specific skills and misconceptions.

Rich Tasks and Open-Ended Questions:
Engaging students with challenging and thought-provoking problems with enabling and extending prompts that allow for differentiated learning.

Games and Practical Activities:
Making learning fun and relevant to everyday life with hands-on manipulatives.

Discussion of Solution Strategies via Number Talks:
Promoting collaborative learning, sharing different approaches, and enhancing students’ ability to reason and make mathematical generalisations.

Context-Based Lessons:
Building activities based on students’ experiences and individual learning needs to promote engagement and make real-world connections.

Targeting Teaching and Learning

Our planning is guided by student needs and ongoing assessment, which informs goal setting to personalise learning using the FISO improvement cycle. This cycle involves working in collaborative teams to evaluate student data to identify learning needs, setting goals, planning and teaching, and then evaluating progress. Teachers work with targeted needs groups to model and discuss mathematical concepts, strategies, and skills tailored to each student’s point of need.

During independent time, students practice these skills through:

Maths Equipment and ICT:
Utilizing tools and technology to reinforce concepts.

Maths Games and Investigations:
Engaging with interactive and hands-on learning activities.

Problem Solving and Collaboration:
Encouraging questioning and the sharing of alternative methods through a series of problem-solving strategies.

Collaborative Learning Experiences:
Helping students make connections and understand the importance of numeracy in their daily lives.

Promoting a Growth Mindset

Our workshop model aims to provide all students with access to high-level mathematics while focusing on specific skills. We promote discussion and multiple ways of thinking about maths through Number Talks and regular open-ended tasks that challenge student thinking. Making mistakes is valued as an opportunity to improve, and with support, students identify misconceptions and clarify their thinking. They are encouraged to see themselves as mathematicians—asking questions, taking risks, explaining their processes, and justifying their thinking.

At Casey Fields, we inspire learning and engage students in their mathematical journey, preparing them for a future where they can confidently navigate the world with strong numeracy skills.
